TASK BASED LANGUAGE TEACHING


The task is defined as an activity or action which is carried out as the result of processing or understanding language. (Richards,1986)
A task is really a special form of technique. In other cases, several techniques may comprise a task.
Task Based use different kinds of tasks in language teaching to make it more communicative. Task is assumed to refer to a workplans which have the purpose of facilitating language learning from a simple to more complex activities.


Characteristics

  • A pre-task phase typically begins a task sequence.
  • The tasks are meaningful and relevant.
  • Students are actively engaged with the task.
  • The task has clear outcomes.
  • A post-task phase takes place to reinforce students’ learning.

Role of the teacher

  • Choose task based on student’s needs
  • Monitors the student’s performance and intervenes as necessary
  • Constantly evaluates students in light of task outcomes and the language they use

Role of the students

  • Communicate with their peers to complete a task
  • Work closely together to help each other accomplish the task and to problem solve.


Types of Tasks by Prabhu

  • Information-gap Task (involves the exchange of imormation among participants)
  • Opinion-gap Task (requires that students express their personal preferences)
  • Reasoning-gap Task (studetns derive some new information by inferring it)
